Transportation Company - North Louisiana & Gulf - Railroad

Company History: The NL&G was established in 1906 by the owners of Huie-Hodge Lumber Company to connect their mills to the local line-haul railroads. Ultimately, NL&G cobbled together a 40 mile route between Hodge and Gibsland, Louisiana (the last 15 miles between Bienville and Gibsland was purchased from Louisiana & North West in 1949.) In the steam era, NL&G ran with 2-6-0’s and 4-6-0’s. The diesel era began in 1950 when a fleet of four GE 70 ton switchers began arriving. These were quickly joined by a quartet of SW8’s and a small Plymouth switcher. This fleet began to wear out in the 1970s. NL&G leased F-units from Kansas City Southern for a period until four MP15DC’s could be delivered from EMD in 1975. These were later joined by a used GP38 and a slug. NL&G was acquired by MidLouisiana Rail (itself a subsidiary of MidSouth) in the summer of 1987. It exists today as a paper railroad under the Kansas City Southern flag.
Successor/Parent History:
MLRC was established in 1987 when MidSouth Rail purchased the North Louisiana & Gulf and their subsidiary Central Louisiana & Gulf, combining them under the MidLouisiana Rail name. The 64 mile line ran between Gibsland and Winnfield, Louisiana. The locomotive fleet consisted of three MP15’s and a GP38. Traffic included chemicals, lumber, paper and pulpwood. In 1994, MidLouisiana along with the other MidSouth properties were merged into Kansas City Southern.
Brief History:
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
