Transportation Company - Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern - Railroad

Company History: This Mississippi shortline was established in 1923 to buy a 27 mile line between Beaumont and Hattiesburg from the Gulf Mobile & Northern. Mississippi Central was leasing the line from GM&N and fought the sale in the courts for two years. B&HS finally took over the line in 1925. In 1953, the B&HS was sold to the Enoch family who also owned the nearby Fernwood Columbia & Gulf. The line was dieselized in 1961 after the death of their steam master mechanic. They picked up a pair of used SW1’s from Wabash. When the Illinois Central Gulf merger of 1972 threatened to surround the B&HS, both the B&HS and Fernwood Columbia & Gulf were merged into the ICG. Today, this line has never been in better shape. It has been rebuilt with heavy rail and deep ballast and is used as part of Canadian National’s Mobile, Alabama to Jackson, Mississippi mainline.
Successor/Parent History:
On August 10, 1972, the Illinois Central Railroad merged with the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad to form the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad (reporting mark ICG).
In 1988 the railroad's then-parent company IC Industries spun off its remaining rail assets and changed its name to the Whitman Corporation (which became PepsiAmericas in 2000 and was acquired outright by PepsiCo in 2010). On February 29, 1988, the newly separated ICG dropped the "Gulf" from its name and again became the Illinois Central Railroad.
On February 11, 1998 the IC was purchased for approximately $2.4 billion in cash and shares by Canadian National Railway (CN). Integration of operations began July 1, 1999.
