Transportation Company - Central Illinois - Railroad

Company History: This hapless line launched in 2000 to lease and operate what would become 3 segments of BNSF industrial trackage (originally CB&Q and Illinois Northern) in the greater Chicago area. In 2005, CIRY took over as operator from Pioneer Industrial Railway of some city-owned trackage in the Peoria area. On the very first day of the Peoria operation, CIRY used a TrackMobile to move a load of lumber and the “train” ran away! It got up to 30mph on 10mph track and derailed when it hit a block of standing cars at the bottom of the hill. Luckily, no one was hurt. CIRY apparently never ran a train on that line again. The city official who was in charge of the rail line was in jail for solicitation of murder (of his girlfriend) and was in no position to oppose other officials who wanted to turn the line into a trail. Meanwhile back in Chicago, after 10 years of service, citing operating losses, CIRY let the lease on the Chicago area lines lapse and BNSF resumed service. Chicago Terminal Railroad has since taken over one of these segments.
