Transportation Company - Charles City Western - Railroad

Company History: This line opened in 1911 to connect Charles City, Iowa to a connection with the Rock Island at Marble Rock, 13 miles to the southwest. The line started with an all gas-mechanical roster but a pair of steam locomotives were added shortly after startup. In 1915, trolley wire was strung and electric locomotives and interurban cars acquired. The two largest customers were a tractor plant and a large nursery in Charles City. A pair of small GE industrial diesels arrived in 1944 and were primarily used to switch the tractor plant. Passenger service faded away in 1952. On the last day of 1963, Charles City Western was acquired by fellow traction line Iowa Terminal Railroad.
