Company History: The CUT opened in 1933 to bring the passenger terminals for all of the Queen City’s steam roads under one roof. The railroads using the terminal included:
Baltimore & Ohio;
Chesapeake & Ohio;
Big Four (CCC&StL which was part of the New York Central System);
Louisville & Nashville;
Norfolk & Western;
Pennsylvania;
Southern Railway.
Its position was unique in that it brought together northeastern trunk lines (B&O, Big Four, PRR) with the Pocahantas lines (represented by N&W, C&O) and lines of the South (represented by L&N and Southern.) The facility could handle up to 216 arrivals and departures in a day. A small fleet of CUT switchers did the honors of moving passenger and express cars around the facility. The creation of Amtrak in 1971 brought traffic down to a trickle and the following year, they moved to a smaller facility. Today, the headhouse is known as the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal.
