Transportation Company - Black Hills & Fort Pierre - Railroad

Company History: This 3’ gauge line was established under the Black Hills Railroad name in 1881 (the name change was made the following year) and ultimately built a 58 mile line between Lead and Calcite, North Dakota along with a branch from Mystic to Este. The project was backed by the Homestake Mining Company ostensibly to deliver lumber to their calcite mine. In 1901, the railroad was sold to the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad (a CB&Q subsidiary.) 6 of the 58 miles were already dual-gauge and under B&MR leadership, the dual gauge was extended all the way from Lead to Calcite. With the calcite mine closed, the last train ran in March of 1930.
