Transportation Company - Louisiana Midland - Railroad

Company History: The LM was born in 1946 as a spin-off from Louisiana & Arkansas running the 77 mile line between Packton and Vidalia, Louisiana. The new owner was a quarry operator who wanted to preserve service to his facility. In 1967, Illinois Central was preparing to acquire L&M’s eastern connection, the Mississippi Central and agreed to acquire the L&M along with them. Then in 1974, IC’s successor Illinois Central Gulf sold the L&M line to a Chicago area investor and the Louisiana Midland name was re-born, although now with LOAM reporting marks. Over the years, the mainline deteriorated and through traffic dwindled to nothing. LOAM became a local switching line for the towns of Packton and Ferriday. The last train ran in 1985 and the line was abandoned shortly after.
