Transportation Company - Upper Merion & Plymouth - Railroad

Company History: The UMP opened in 1907 to serve the Allen Wood Steel Company rolling mill in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. By the mid-80s, the railroad and mill were owned by Lukens Steel. They purchased Conrail’s former Reading bridge over Schuylkill River and what remained of their Oreland Branch. Today, UMP runs 14 miles of industrial track in Conshohocken and Swedeland, serving the old Allen Wood rolling mill, and Heckscher coke ovens, as well as three customers who moved onto unused portions of the steel mill property. They include a printing plant for the Philadelphia Inquirer, Lonza Chemicals and a wood treatment company.
