Youngstown & Southern

Company History: This was originally an electric interurban line called Youngstown & Suburban. During WWII, they saw the writing on the wall, changed their name and started planning to become a freight only line. In '48 all passenger service ended and the trolley wire came down shortly after. The line ran from Youngstown, Ohio to Darlington, Pennsylvania 35 miles away, plus a 13 mile branch. The Y&S had been owned by the Montour Railroad (a busy Pennsylvania coal hauler) since the 20s. Traffic, mostly steel and brick, was light with just 2 switchers handling the traffic for many years. By 1992, control of the Y&S was in the hands of CSX. They leased it in 1993 to PL&W Railroad. More changing of hands, leases and failed attempts to abandon the line followed. Today this line is operated with some success as the Youngstown & Southeastern.
