Transportation Company - Appanoose County Community - Railroad

Company History: This company was formed in 1983 by the city of Centerville, Iowa to operate 35 miles of line between Centerville and the rail hub of Albia, Iowa that was being abandoned. The route is made up of segments originally belonging to Rock Island, Wabash and Chicago Burlington & Quincy. Disaster struck in 2006 when the APNC's largest customer Rubbermaid closed their plant in Centerville, taking 75% of APNC's traffic with them. But, the line has soldiered on and recently received a half million dollar grant to replace a bridge on the north end of the line. The bridge replacement prevented a rail customer with 400 employees from having to move out of the area. In 2016, operation of the route was turned over to the new Iowa Southern Railway, part of the Progressive Rail family of shortlines.
