Company History: The DAKR launched in 1982 to operate a former Milwaukee Road line in North Dakota. They expanded in 1985 when they bought the 44 mile former Great Northern line from Hutchinson to Wayzata, Minnesota from Burington Northern. The old Milwaukee Road line was handed over to the Sisseton Southern in 1987 and Dakota Rail fell into bankruptcy the following year. The remaining ex-GN segment of Dakota Rail was sold in 1990 to local interests who kept the Dakota Rail name. The line was famous for using a pair of F7s in freight service. In addition to moving farm products, plastics and alcohol, Dakota Rail also had a dinner train. In 1995, the railroad became part of the RailAmerica shortline group. Sadly, the line was formally abandoned in 2001 and exists today as a bicycle trail.
Successor/Parent History:
RailAmerica, Inc., based in Jacksonville, Florida, was a holding company of a number of short-line railroads and regional railroads in the United States and Canada. In 2007, RailAmerica was acquired by Fortress Investment Group.
On July 23, 2012, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. announced that it intended to purchase RailAmerica. They assumed control on December 28, 2012.
