Notes: The Rolex President Day-Date's first claim to fame was the dial that displayed not only the date, but the day spelled out in full. As the Day-Date gained in popularity, its list of notable owners grew to include almost every American President. From Richard Nixon to JFK, the Day-Date has attracted some of the world's most powerful men. The vintage reference 18038 that we have here today features an 18 karat yellow gold case measuring 36mm. A classic fluted bezel frames the case and pairs well with the champagne dial and yellow gold indices and hands. A perpetual movement is the powerhouse behind the Day-Date 18038 and features a day and date disc as well as a Quickset function.
Alternate Movement: Rolex 3055
Mechanism:
The Rolex caliber 3035 was introduced in 1977 as what many refer to as a high-beat caliber 1575. In 1977, the Cal. 3035 ended the 12-year run of the 1570, it became the first men’s high-beat caliber Rolex had ever made. By increasing the balance speed from 19,800bph to 28,800bph, the new movement was able to offer an even greater level of accuracy and robustness than the already formidable abilities of its predecessor. The 3035 has a hacking capability.

It was this new speed on the 3035, causing the seconds hand to ‘tick’ eight times per second, that introduced the smooth sweep that is so characteristic of Rolex watches. Along with upping the movement’s frequency, which has since been adopted by every subsequent model Rolex has produced, the Cal. 3035 also led the field in another aspect; it was the first automatic caliber to feature a quickset function.
Family Notes: The Rolex Day-Date was introduced in 1956. It soon became known as the "Rolex President". It was unofficially renamed after President Eisenhower became associated with this model watch. This association was made as the watch was known to have been worn by LBJ and shared a scandalous connection to JFK. Since then it has earned the vote of a diverse array of potentates, including Warren Buffett, Jay Z, and (fictional character) Tony Soprano. In 1977, Rolex started using the new (at the time) 3055 movement for the Day-Date/President line. As of 2018, the Day-Date 40 uses the 3255 movement.
