Transportation Company - Carrizo Gorge - Railroad

Company History: The CZRY was established in 1997 to take over service on the portion of the old San Diego & Arizona Eastern between Tijuana, Mexico and Plaster City, California. CZRY actually became the official operator of the Mexican segment in 2000. The previous operator San Diego & Imperial Valley had balked at rebuilding two fire damaged trestles on the route. The damaged portion of the route was reopened in 2004. Freight traffic was primarily sand for making concrete but CZRY took a run at the tourist train business – even acquiring a pair of F units that had been used on Washington Central’s dinner train.

The east end of the line was closed in 2008 due to deteriorating track and roadbed conditions. In 2011, they stopped operating the Mexican portion (it was taken over by Baja California Railroad.) At the end of 2012, the rest of the leases were turned over to Pacific Imperial Railroad and the CZRY officially became a fallen flag.
