Company History: NB Southern was born in the aftermath of Canadian Pacific’s retrenchment from New England and the Maritime Provinces. Operations began during the first week of 1995. The mainline runs from St. John, New Brunswick to Brownville Junction, Maine and its connection with Central Maine & Quebec (now Canadian Pacific again.) There is also a branch from McAdam to St. Stephen and Woodland, New Brunswick.

The track on the US side is owned by a paper railroad, Eastern Maine Railway, but NBSR locomotives are used on these lines. Total mileage is 189. In addition to connections with CMQ (now CP,) they also connect with Pan Am and Canadian National. NBSR and sister road Maine Northern are subsidiaries of J.D. Irving Ltd. The diesel fleet includes six GP38-3’s, two SW1200’s, eight SD40-2’s and a chopped nose GP9. In addition the have leased about 16 more diesels.
