Company History: The SNR was launched in 2000 by the parent company of the Denver Rock Island Railroad when Canadian Pacific announced plans to abandon their 26 mile branch between Rosholt and Veblen, South Dakota. CP inherited the line from Soo Line who had purchased it from the builder, the Fairmount & Veblen Railway. A single SW1 works the line although the line is now used exclusively for car storage, operations are at best infrequent. The segment from Claire City west to Veblen was officially abandoned in 2012 although the rail had been removed sometime before.
Successor/Parent History:
The DRIR started in 1993 and expanded in 2004, operating a trio of yard/transloading sites (Silver Yard, Stockyards and North Washington Park) in the greater Denver, Colorado area. The locomotive fleet consists of an SW1, two NW2’s,two SW1500’s, and a GP16. In 2019, DRIR stood in the way of the City of Denver’s plans for the National Western Center campus along the South Platte River. The city threatened to take the offending segment of track by eminent domain so DRIR sued the city in federal court. The court ruled that the city would pay DRIR $16.75 million to move their line out of the way.
Brief History:
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
