Company History: The A&W was chartered in 1890 with the goal of building a 3’ gauge line from Altoona, Pennsylvania to resorts in Wopsononock in the surrounding mountains, then on to timber and mining lands beyond. An 8 mile line was finished the following year between the two namesake cities and the name of the railroad was changed to Altoona Clearfield & Northern. The next year, the line was extended 13 miles to the town of Dougherty. Then followed a five year battle for control of the company. In 1897, the railroad was sold at foreclosure and the new Altoona & Beech Creek Railroad took over the line.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
