Company History: The Buchans Railway was built in 1928 to link a large copper mining operation at Buchans in central Newfoundland, Canada to a connection with their sister railroad the Millertown Railway at Buchans Junction 19 miles away. The copper ore and other materials were handed off to the Millertown Railway, then the Newfoundland Railway, then the Grand Falls Central to reach the port at Botwood Harbour. All of these railroads were 3’ 6” gauge. A trio of Whitcomb diesels delivered in 1949 and 1952 replaced Buchans’ trio of steamers. The Buchans Railway logo includes “ASARCO” (American Smelting & Refining Company) who was Buchans’ parent company. In 1957, Buchans took over the Millertown Railway. The copper mine closed in 1976 and the railroad was pulled up the following year.
