Company History: NYNJ was born in 2006 when Mid-Atlantic New England Rail, LLC purchased the New York Cross Harbor Railroad. They sold it to the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey two years later. They wanted NYNJ’s properties on both sides of the Hudson River for the possible construction of a freight railroad tunnel under the river. In the meantime, they continue to use car floats and tugs to move rail traffic across the river. Since the New Haven’s Poughkeepsie Bridge was damaged by fire and closed in 1974, the closest railroad bridge over the Hudson is 140 miles to the north of New York City. Hurricane Sandy did significant damage to the line, flooding the Greenville Terminal, damaging float bridges and sinking a car float. After 52 days of work, NYNJ reopened. They are now planning to build two new float bridges and two new 18 car capacity car floats.
