Transportation Company - Albany Street - Railroad

Company History: Albany Street Railway Company was established in 1889 as a horse-car line running from the Southern Pacific depot in Albany, Oregon to the city’s downtown area. After three years, the line was extended from the SP depot south to an orphanage run by the Ladies Aid Society. A steam dummy was used to pull a streetcar on this line. When the steam dummy suffered a serious mechanical failure in 1900, the line to the orphanage was abandoned. ASR became an all-horse powered line once again. This lasted until 1903 when increased traffic led the company to buy a small Porter 0-4-0T to replace the horses. On the last day of 1908, the Albany Street Railway was merged into the Portland Eugene & Eastern.
Successor/Parent History:
Portland Eugene and Eastern was involved in several railroads before being purchased by the Southern Pacific. Major portions included Corvallis to Eugene, an electric railway around West Linn, Canby to Molalla, Sheridan to Willamina, and several streetcar lines.
