Capital City Street

Company History: The CCSRwy was the first city-wide electric streetcar line to open in the United States. Serving the city of Montgomery, Alabama, the line started out as a horse car line that was electrified in 1886. As a result, Montgomery was one of the first cities to suburbanize. The line soon picked up the nickname “The Lightning Route.” After the turn of the century, CCSRwy succumbed to pressure to establish seating segregated by race. The city council and Mayor Teague (D) passed the Montgomery Streetcar Act in 1906 that codified segregation on the CCSRwy. Streetcar service ended and was replaced with buses in 1936.
