Company History: The CNE was established in 1899 to take over the Pennsylvania Reading & New England Railroad which had been controlled by the Reading Company before running into trouble requiring reorganization. The CNE ran from Sprinfield, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut in the east, west to Poughkeepsie where the line bridged the Hudson River and continued southwest to important junctions at Maybrook and Campbell Hall, New York. In addition, there were branches to Rhinecliff on the Hudson and Hopewell, Connecticut. New York New Haven & Hartford bought control of the CNE in 1904 and finally merged the railroad into the NYNH&H system in 1927.
