Transportation Company - Chicago Attica & Southern - Railroad

Company History: The CA&S was established in 1922 to acquire a piece of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois in Indiana that was being sold as part of C&EI’s reorganization. The 155 mile line ran from Wellsboro south to Goodland, Attica and West Melcher, Indiana. A branch ran from Goodland to a connection with the C&EI on the Illinois border near Momence. Traffic was light requiring just six secondhand steam locomotives. The owners tried to lease the line to New York Central but NYC determined the property to be too far gone to rebuild given the amount of traffic. CA&S fell into receivership in 1931. Abandonments began in 1943 and in 1946 the CA&S closed for good.
Successor/Parent History:
The CSL was established in 1913 to unify the four existing Chicago streetcar lines. The unification created the largest streetcar system in the world. The fleet included 3,100 streetcars. As early as 1927, buses began taking over some routes. The CSL, which had been operating in receivership for a number of years, was taken over by Chicago Transit Authority in 1947.
Brief History:
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
