Model Information: This body style comes in two different variations: Double Door and Single Door.
Prototype History:
In the early 1960s, the auto industry, looking for better and more efficient ways of shipping parts to assembly plants, worked with railroads and car builders to develop specialized freight cars. The primary requirement was the ability to handle a variety of different parts without the use of custom-built interior fixtures and racks. The 60 foot cars were for higher density items such as engines, transmissions and castings. Their big brothers, the 86 footers handled lower-density automotive components such as stamped parts.

Various manufacturers built these cars including ACF, NSC and Pullman. National Steel Car's 103-ton, 60-foot, 9-inch box car is equipped with rub rails and interior lading securement; double 8-foot plug doors that are 12-feet, 9-inches high, have a 16-foot clear opening, 60,000 pound nailable steel floor and 15-inch end of car cushioning. NSC box cars are available with a variety of options and can be tailored to suit specific shipping needs.
Road Name History:
Golden West was a financial invention -- SP wanted to get capital equipment off the books but the railroad needed the cars. So a corporation was invented that used borrowed money to "buy" the cars, refurbish them, and lease them back to the SP. In the long run this is basically a transfer of wealth from the railroad to the investors, but in the short run it helped the railroad by providing working capital. The UP ended the whole deal as soon as it could and that is why everything is reverting to original ownership.
Brand/Importer Information:
The Freight Yard was a hobby shop that did custom decoration and special runs of other manufacturers' N Scale products. It sold its custom products under several brands or collections: Premiere Editions, by The Freight Yard and Dreams Design.
It was located in Anaheim, California and then moved to 2006 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Established in the late 1980s, it stopped business under this name by the end of the 2000s.
The Freight Yard was owned and operated by Darren J. Cohen. Darren is now operating North Valley Trains.
The Freight Yard / Premiere Editions runs are usually available in series of two to twelve different numbers (suffixed A to M, with I not used).
The first two digits of the stock number correspond to the release year (9x being 199x, and 2x being 200x).
