History: Side-Dump or Tipping gondolas are typically short (40 foot or less in length) railcars most often used in maintenance of way (MOW) functions. They are distinctly different than Open Hoppers (which they loosely resemble) because they lack bay doors. They discharge by having their upper section tip to one side or the other to unload their contents. Most typically they will be carrying sand or ballast.
