History: During the Post War period in Europe, all countries were suffering from a devastating economic situation. Rail transport was critical for the rebuilding of Europe, but the capability of building modern equipment was limited. Hence, tremendous energy went into the refurbishing and maintenance of pre-war equipment. As result, the period demonstrated an amazing array of equipment on the railroads from all different times. Essentially the railroad operators became adept and making just about anything run so a wide variety of outdated equipment was serving side-by-side with the latest and greatest innovations of the time.

Passenger service especially was where old equipment seemed to get an amazing new lease on life as passenger service was consider a second priority after freight and therefore received new railcars and locomotives only after freight requirements were satisfied.
