Specific Item Information:
The Commer Commando is already part of the 1:76 scale series and our newly tooled 1:148 version is an exact replica of the RAF liveried model with which we launched the 1:76 scale series, down to the last detail. It is decorated in the RAF blue-grey colour scheme with black wings and wheel arches, the vehicle is registered XAT 368 and features the RAF roundel on each side. The interior panels are bright blue with a pale grey floor. Externally, lots of chrome highlights the door handles, window surrounds, grilles, footsteps, radiator, bonnet trim and bumpers.
Our Commer Commando is modelled on a vehicle housed and on public display at the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington and the crew bus is thought to be one of only five to survive into preservation. The Museum is well worth a visit if you are in East Yorkshire this summer.
Model Information:
Factory painted and assembled, the Oxford Diecast line of metal vehicle models are 1:148 (British) N-Scale.
Prototype History:
After the Second World War, the RAF and the then British Overseas Airways Corporation were in need of vehicles to transport passengers between airports and city centre terminals. A design specification was drawn up by the Ministry of Supply for a vehicle to accommodate 20 passengers carrying their maximum 60lbs of luggage. This led to the 1½ deck observation coach design with 180 cu ft luggage space. A total of 375 (later modified to 315) vehicles was ordered from the Park Royal Coachworks based on the well established Commer Q4 Commando chassis.
