Company History: The National Bureau of Standards (NBS) was founded by Congress on March 3, 1901 as an authoritative domestic measurement and standards laboratory, and was the first physical science research laboratory of the federal government. In 1988, the National Bureau of Standards was renamed the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
