The Royal National Lifeboat Institution was founded in 1824 by William Hillary and comprises a registered charity run by volunteers with around 40,000 men and women who give their time freely and bravely to man the lifeboat when the shout goes out, day or night in all weathers. The RNLI, whose motto is Saving Lives at Sea, operates right round the shores of the UK including its surrounding islands and inland waterways. The lifeboat station is always worth a visit when open to the public and the larger ones also support a shop, where you may well find our Oxford replica lifeboat support vehicle.
Prototype History:
The Land Rover Defender (initially called the Land Rover Ninety and Land Rover One Ten) is a British four-wheel drive off-road vehicle developed in the 1980s from the original Land Rover Series which was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948. After a continuous run of 67 years production finally ended on 29 January 2016 when the last Land Rover Defender, with the number plate H166 HUE, rolled off the production line. A special edition Defender Works V8, with 400bhp, was announced in January 2018. The next-generation model, codenamed L663, will be completely redesigned and come in two wheelbase sizes.

Road Name History:
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the largest charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways. It is one of several lifeboat services operating in the same area.
Founded in 1824 as the National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, soon afterwards becoming the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck, under the patronage of King George IV. On 5 October 1854, the Institution’s name was changed to its current name, and in 1860 was granted a Royal Charter.
The RNLI is a charity in the UK and in the Republic of Ireland. Queen Elizabeth II is Patron. The RNLI is principally funded by legacies (65%) and donations (28%), with the remainder from merchandising and investment. Most of the members of its lifeboat crews are unpaid volunteers.
Its main base is in Poole, Dorset. It has 238 lifeboat stations and operates 444 lifeboats. RNLI Lifeguards operate on more than 200 beaches. The lifeguards are paid by local authorities, while the RNLI provides equipment and training. The Institution also operates Flood Rescue Teams nationally and internationally, the latter prepared to travel to emergencies overseas at short notice.
Considerable effort is put into training and education by the Institution, particularly for young people; more than 6,000 children a week are spoken to by education volunteers about sea and beach safety, and over 800 children a week receive training. Crews rescued on average 22 people a day in 2015. The Institution has saved some 140,000 lives since its foundation, at a cost of more than 600 lives lost in service. From Wikipedia
