Company History:
The A&M was launched in 1902 by the Vinegar Bend Lumber Company to lease the company’s logging line and convert it to a common carrier. It ran southwest from Vinegar Bend, Alabama and was extended to Leakesville, Mississippi. In 1915, they leased the Pascagoula Moss Point & Northern which ran from Pascagoula north to Evanston. In 1916, the gap between Leakesville and Evanston was finally closed resulting in a 76 mile railroad. Almost immediately, the line was wrecked by a hurricane and the company faltered. By 1923, the original line from Vinegar Bend to Leakesville had been leased to the Mississippi & Alabama Railroad, the original PMP&N had been sold to Mississippi Export Railroad, and the bit in the middle had been abandoned. A&M’s all time locomotive roster included three 2-6-0’s and four 4-6-0’s, all of which were purchased secondhand.
