Company History: ATCo. was launched in 1905 to takeover operation of an earlier company that had only just converted to electric operation from horse-car service. It ran from downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico to Old Town Plaza with branches to Huning Highlands, the local University and Barelas. In total, there were 6 miles of line. The hub of the line was the AT&SF depot and the Alvarado Hotel (a Fred Harvey operation.) The company slipped into bankruptcy in 1915 and was taken over by City Electric Company with streetcar operations continuing as before.
Successor/Parent History:
CECo. assumed operations of the lines of the failed Albuquerque Traction Company in 1915. There were three routes, radiating from downtown Albuquerque. One ran to Old Town Plaza, one to Huning Highlands and the University of New Mexico and the third connecting Barelas and the industrial district north of the city. Women held down the conductor positions and were called Motorettes. The company slipped into bankruptcy in 1927. The streetcars were replaced with buses in 1929.
Brief History:
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
