Company History: During the organization of Conrail, hundreds of lines deemed superfluous to Conrail were turned over to public agencies, existing shortlines and in some cases, groups of shippers. One of these lines was the former Pennsylvania Railroad Morrison’s Cove Secondary which ran between Roaring Spring and Curryville with a branch to Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. A group of shippers organized the Morrison’s Cove Railroad to acquire the line in 1982. The Allegheny Southern Railway was established to be the designated operator of the line that year. This arrangement lasted until the end of the contract on December 31, 1984. The following day, the Everett Railroad became the designated operator of this line.
Successor/Parent History:
The EV was launched in 1954 to take over operation of a portion of the Huntington & Broad Top Mountain Railroad & Coal Company around Everett in central Pennsylvania. In 1982, Conrail severed the EV’s only connecting line and the operation was abandoned. The company sat in limbo for 2 years before re-opening as the operator of an ex-PRR route between Brookes Mill and Spoul. Since then, EV added another nearby line and became the designated operator of the shipper-owned Hollidaysburg & Roaring Spring Railroad. The combined 23 mile system is shaped like an inverted Y, running from Duncansville south to Brookes Mill where it splits with one line running south to Sproul and the other southeast to Martinsburg. Traffic includes grain, feed, pulp, paper, lumber and manufactured goods. EV operates excursion trains behind a 2-6-0 and 2-8-0, the latter was originally run by the Huntington & Broad Top Mountain (and is the only steamer from that line that was saved from the scrapper’s torch.) Once in a while, the steamers are used in freight service to break them in, often after heavy maintenance.
Brief History:
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
