Company History: Chemex Railway opened in 1988 with a quarter-mile of track in the port city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Interchange is via a 23 car capacity car barge sailing from Mobile, Alabama. Traffic is chemicals used as feedstocks for the island’s extensive pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. Power is provided by a single EMD SW1. When it is down for heavy maintenance, another locomotive is rented and barged from the mainland.

Brief History:
