Company History:
The CA&C was established in 1882 to acquire and operate the Cleveland Mount Vernon & Delaware that had fallen into receivership the previous year. It ran from Columbus, Ohio to Millersburg with a branch (and trackage rights) to Zanesville. Ownership of the CA&C later passed to the Pennsylvania Company but it remained nominally independent until 1899 when the Pennsylvania Company formally took control. The CA&C then became the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Akron Division. In 1911 the parent company merged the CA&C with the Cincinnati & Muskingum Valley to create the Cleveland Akron & Cincinnati.
Successor/Parent History:
The CA&C was the result of the 1911 merger of the Cincinnati & Muskingum Valley Railroad and the Cleveland Akron & Columbus Railway. The result was a 335 mile line connecting Akron, Zanesville, Lancaster, and other Ohio communities. The company was leased by the Pennsylvania Company, a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad that managed PRR’s holdings west of Pittsburgh. In 1918, the corporate structure was reorganized and CA&C became a direct subsidiary of PRR. In 1926 the CA&C was merged with several other lines leased by PRR in Ohio and Michigan to form the Pennsylvania Ohio & Detroit Railroad.
