Company History: The NN was established in 1905 by the Nevada Consolidated Copper Company and within a year had built a 166 mile line from their copper mine near Ely to a connection with the Central Pacific (later Southern Pacific) Overland Route in Cobre, Nevada. While the NN routinely switched cars around the southern end of the line where the mine and smelter were, the lion’s share of the mainline to Cobre (and a connection to the Western Pacific at Shafter) usually saw just two trains per week. Kennecott Copper (the successor to NCCCo.,) closed their mill east of Ely and the Nevada Northern in 1983. The southern end became the Nevada Northern Railway Museum. The line to Shafter and Cobre remains in place but is rarely used.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
