Beristain-Necaxa
Company History:
This 3’ gauge railroad was built by the Mexican Light & Power Company in Beristain, Mexico approximately in 1903 to facilitate the construction of their Rio Necaxa hydroelectric station. The company was established with Canadian money with hopes of selling power to the streetcar lines in Mexico City. The streetcar lines later took control of the company. It was nationalized in 1960. There was talk of extending the line to Xicoltepec but it’s unclear if that extension was ever built. They acquired a 33 ton Shay and named it Tona La Negra. They also had an 0-4-0T. Both engines have been preserved. In addition, they converted a Studebaker Big Six for operation on rails. It’s unknown when this line ceased operations.

Ancient ruins such as Teotihuacán and the Mayan city of Chichén Itzá are scattered throughout the country, as are Spanish colonial-era towns. In capital Mexico City, upscale shops, renowned museums and gourmet restaurants cater to modern life.
