Boynton Bicycle

Company History: The BBRwy was the brainchild of E, Moody Boynton who built his monorail on the grade of the abandoned Sea Beach & Brighton Railroad from Gravesend to Coney Island, New York in 1890. Locomotive #1 weighed 9 tons and had a single 6’ driving wheel and a 2-wheel trailing truck – essentially making it an 0-1-2 wheel arrangement. Balance at low speed was maintained with simple rollers against an overhead stringer make of 8” yellow pine. The rail wheels had double flanges. Passenger cars were double decked and could each carry 72 people each. Trains were typically 3 cars long with 50 round trips per day on the short 2 mile route. The BBRwy closed after 2 years.
