Company History: The 1891 establishment of the C&SE was the third attempt to reorganize what was originally the Anderson Lebanon & St. Louis which was formed in 1875. This time, Chicago lawyer Henry Crawford had the reigns. This new company managed to finish a 127 mile line from Muncie west to Brazil, Indiana. They had hoped to continue west to St. Louis but Brazil was as close as they got. Chicago was never in the cards. The C&SE, like its predecessors disappointed its shareholders and in 1902 they snapped at the opportunity to sell the railroad jointly to a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Big Four. Both were looking for a way to bypass busy Indianapolis on their way to St. Louis. The following year, the C&SE was renamed Central Indiana Railroad.
Successor/Parent History: The Central Indiana Railway, the last railroad to be constructed in Madison County, began life on July 3, 1871 as the Anderson, Lebanon & St. Louis Railroad with a meeting of seven men in Lebanon, Indiana. It's first President was Colonel Thomas N. Stilwell. Votes were held in Anderson and Stony Creek Townships on a tax levy to aid in the construction of the railroad. The tax levy passed and stock was sold in an effort to raise funds. Construction was begun on April 17, 1873 with the first shovelful of earth being turned by President Stilwell, but work was slowed due to the refusal of many taxpayers to pay the tax levy and with the absence of other funds, it wasn't until December 11, 1875, that the first spike was driven at Anderson at 2:30 p.m. by President Zion, the successor to President Stilwell.
Brief History: The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
