Company History:
The CA&D was the result of the 1909 reorganization of the Aurora DeKalb & Rockford Electric Traction Company, a 19 mile line connecting Aurora and DeKalb, Illinois that had been conceived as an electric interurban line but changed to gas-mechanical cars with steam locomotives handling the freight. The CA&D decided to electrify the line once again with the final wire strung in 1910. Freight continued to move behind steam. Just three years later, the company slipped into receivership again. It struggled on for another decade before being purchased in 1923 by a local scrap dealer. After a battle before the Interstate and Illinois Commerce Commissions, the CA&D was scrapped.
