Company History: The NSS was established in 1899 by American Steel & Wire to build a 7 mile railroad in Cleveland, Ohio. They were later acquired by U.S. Steel. The purpose was to move hot metal from the AS&W blast furnaces to the Newburg Steel Works. At the peak of the steam era, NSS ran 32 locomotives. Diesels began arriving in 1939 and by 1947 the NSS was completely dieselized. In 1984, the last of the big mills on the NSS closed. A bit over 2 miles of line were sold to Cyahoga Valley Railway. In 1986, the NSS was abandoned. The tops of the rails had barely begun to rust when Chicago West Pullman Transportation swooped in and bought the NSS from U.S. Steel and resumed operation. CWP later sold the NSS to the OmniTRAX shortline group who operates it today (with NSR reporting marks.)
