Company History:
This line was established in 1968 to reorganize the Sydney & Louisburg Railway. The line linked coal mines with docks on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island. For the first few years, they continued to use the Sydney & Louisburg name but the Devco Railway name was completely phased in by the mid-70s. By 2001, the coal mines had played out and the railroad was instead used to import coal. At this point, Devco’s parent turned over operation of the railroad to the newly formed Sydney Coal Railway, part of the Société des chemins de fer du Québec shortline group.
