Company History: The JJRD opened in 1983 to take over operation of the 8 mile former L&N route between Hardin and Murray, Kentucky from Seaboard System. The railroad was owned by a grain elevator operator in Hardin and was operated on an as-needed basis. The LLRD locomotive fleet consisted of a single SW1. In 1993, the railroad was sold and became the Hardin Southern.
Successor/Parent History:
The HSRR opened in 1994 to operate the former Nashville Chattanooga & St. Louis line from Hardin, Kentucky to Paris, Tennessee. The HSRR ran tourist trains on the northern end between Hardin and Murray and provided freight service on the whole route. The tourist trains ended in 2004 with freight operations ending a year later. A local agency saved the northern end of the line and contracted with the connecting KWT Railway to serve an industrial park in Murray.
