Company History: The TVA’s Kingston Fossil Plant coal fired electric generating station in Kingston, Tennessee has its own railroad connecting the plant to the Southern Railway yard in Emory Gap, about 6 miles to the northwest. In addition to the obligatory unloading loop, the railroad includes two yards and a passing siding. When the plant and railroad opened in 1955, it was the largest coal fired power plant in the world, a distinction it held for a decade. They would typically burn 14,000 tons of coal per day. A pair of Baldwin S-12’s worked the line for decades before being replaced by a pair of chop nose GP7’s not later than 1991. Later in the decade, the plant began to receive unit trains directly from Norfolk Southern, eliminating the need for their own locomotives and crews. TVA has over the years operated similar railroad operations in Tennessee and Alabama.
