Albia Interurban

Company History: Opened in 1908, the 11 mile Albia Interurban Railway linked the city of Albia, Iowa with the towns of Hiteman and Hocking as well as streetcar routes in Albia. This was coal mining country and the AIRwy was a means for miners and their families in the outlying mining communities to get to Albia for shopping and entertainment. The route also served a small amusement park in Hocking. Improved roads and more automobiles cut into revenues in the early 20s and the company was reorganized as Albia Light & Railway Company. The Railway closed in 1925 but the company continued as an electric utility provider.
