Transportation Company - Alcolu - Railroad

Company History: Established in 1902, this line ran 33 miles from a connection with Atlantic Coast Line in Alcolu, South Carolina to Olanta and Ham. Passenger service ran as far as Ham, 4 miles short of the end of the line. The line was built primarily to feed raw material to the lumber mill in Alcolu. Alcolu Railroad had a connecting sister line, also owned by the same lumber interests, called the Paroda Railroad. Paroda was not a common carrier and moved forest products exclusively for the parent company. Alcolu had trackage rights on the Paroda for general freight service. Paroda was abandoned in 1930. Traffic all but disappeared during the Depression and the Alcolu Railroad was abandoned in June of 1936. A short segment in the city of Alcolu is currently served by CSX to reach a lumber mill.
