Company History: Brimstone Railroad was established by W.M. Ritter Lumber Company when they purchased the New River Lumber Company. The line ran from a connection with Southern’s CNO&TP line in New River, Tennessee southeast to Lone Mountain. The Brimstone moved logs and lumber as well as coal from mines at Hughett and Lone Mountain. A trio of Shays kept the trains moving. In 1965, the railroad was reorganized as the Brimstone & New River and a year later as the New River Railway. Southern’s CNO&TP subsidiary bought and merged the line in 1970.
