Company History: The Brinson Railway opened in 1907 and by 1913 had a line from Savannah, Georgia to a connection with Georgia & Florida Railway in St. Clair. Along the way, they purchased the Savannah Valley Railway, keeping the segment they wanted and leasing the rest to a local lumber company. Brinson Railway is one of a handful of lines named for a person instead of places. In this case, it was the line’s founder George M. Brinson. Brinson planned to continue building northwest to reach Athens, Georgia but couldn’t secure the financing. Brinson left his namesake railroad in 1914 and the line was renamed Savannah & Northwestern Railway.
Successor/Parent History:
The Savannah and Northwestern Railway was a railroad in the U.S. state of Georgia. From 1906 to 1914, it was named the Brinson Railway after its owner, George M. Brinson, a businessman who had earlier built the Stillmore Air Line Railway. The line was originally planned to run from Savannah to Sylvania and had completed from Savannah to Newington by 1909. Around this time the Brinson took over the Savannah Valley Railroad and merged its lines into the Brinson. The company's property was sold to the Savannah and Atlanta Railway on July 16, 1917.
Brief History:
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.
