Company History: The Carolina Central was established in 1880 and built a 27 mile line from Rutherfordton to Shelby, North Carolina, completing the line 7 years after the founding. In 1893, CC joined with a number of other railroads in the area under the “Seaboard Airline Railway” banner which was only a joint marketing organization. These lines were merged to form the Seaboard Air Line Railway (a common carrier) in 1900.
