Company History: The CS was established in 1904 with the goal of building from Chicago, Illinois to East St. Louis with a branch to Salem, Illinois. Construction began in Chicago Heights. By 1907 they had built south 114 miles to Quaker (some of it double tracked.) At that point, financing became difficult and the following year, the company was in receivership. In 1910 the Chicago Southern was acquired by the Chicago Terre Haute & Southeastern Railway, later part of the Milwaukee Road.
Successor/Parent History:
The Chicago, Terre Haute & Southeastern Railway Company was founded in 1910 via the merger of the Evansville & Richmond Railroad Company, Southern Indiana Railway Company, Chicago Southern Railway Company, Bedford Belt Railway Company, and The Chicago, Terre Haute & Southeastern Railway Company of Illinois.

The company owned and operated track extending from Chicago Heights, Ill., south through the eastern portion of Illinois and the, western portion of Indiana through Terre Haute to Elnora, Ind. The Elnora line passed through Bedford and Seymour, to Westport, Ind. Between Chicago Heights and Blue Island, Ill., it had rights over the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad and owned a terminal yard at Blue Island. In Indiana it owned several short branch lines and spurs. Passenger-train service was maintained between Terre Haute and Westport, the eastern terminus, and between Terre Haute and West Dana, Ind. North of West Dana freight service only was given.

The company was acquired by the Milwaukee Road.
